Overview

Poker is a card game that is played with a deck of fifty-two cards. There are several variations of the game, including Texas Hold 'em, Omaha, Seven-card Stud, Five-card Draw, High Chicago, and Low Chicago. The game can be played in person or online. In areas where it is legal, players can bet money or chips while playing the game.

How to Play

All the variations of poker are played differently, but there are basic rules for the game. Most variations allow two to ten people to play at a table. Each player in the game gets five cards and is attempting to get a rare combination of cards. The rarer the combination, the stronger the hand, and the more likely it is to win the round. The highest hand in poker is the royal flush, which consists of five cards of the same suit, ranked ace through ten. Below is an image that shows examples of poker hand rankings, with one being the highest and most likely to win the hand.

Players cannot see the cards of the other players and have to make judgments regarding whether they think they have the most valuable poker hand at the table. Before the game even begins, players can place their initial bet using poker chips, and upon receiving their cards, players can bet more. The other players can call, which means to match the chips or concede and not add any chips to the pot. When a player concedes, they can no longer participate in that round of the game. Players can "bluff" by betting a lot of poker chips on a mediocre or poor hand to trick their opponents into thinking they have a good hand. The point of this is to make the opponent fold and leave the game, allowing for the bluffing player to win the pot of chips.
