Poltava Oblast is situated in the central part of Ukraine. Located on the left bank of Dnieper, Poltava region was part of the Cossack Hetmanate. It has an area of 28,800 km2. The oblast borders upon Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, Cherkasy and Kyiv Oblasts.

Mount Piviha

One of these mountains - Pivikha - is considered the highest point of the Left-Bank Ukraine. It is located at an altitude of 168-169 meters above sea level and from afar resembles either the Odessa Sanzheyka, or the French Riviera (with a stretch). The mountain was formed during the Ice Age. Here, archaeologists find the remains of mammoths, rhinos, reindeer, as well as corals and mollusks. After the construction of the Kremenchug reservoir, the mountain sinks 7 meters annually - this is another reason to go there in the summer, while the borders are closed.

Another place for art connoisseurs is the art gallery in Poltava, where you will definitely find yourself on the way to picturesque places. The paintings of the Flemish artist Clara Peters, the Frenchman Eugene Delacroix, as well as Catherine Bilokur, Francesco Guardi, Jean Baptiste Greuze, Ilya Repin, Ivan Shishkin, Ivan Myasoedov are kept here.

During World War II, the museum had a collection of 30,000 works, most of which were destroyed during the German occupation. Among them are works by Giovanni Tiepolo, Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun, Peter Paul Rubens, Adrian van Ostade, as well as works by Ukrainian painters and masters of the Russian school of the 17th-20th centuries. Only 4,000 works have survived, supplemented by modern canvases.

Sorochinskiy Fair

The event is really colorful - there you can eat dumplings and buy authentic items of Poltava artisans. And if you are lucky, you can see how 70-year-old grannies dance to K-pop.

The fair is held annually in the homeland of the writer Nikolai Gogol. This is a reason to visit Gogol's places in the Poltava region: in the village of Gogolevo (formerly Vasilyevo) there is a museum-reserve where the writer was born and raised. On the feast of Ivan Kupala on July 7, a large-scale theatrical performance is held here, which will take you to the 19th century. Tickets are sold out six months in advance.

However, you have the opportunity to walk through the park and look at the Kochubeyev oaks - old trees that have survived from the oak that surrounded the house. It is unknown who planted them. The territory of the park is extremely beautiful, especially in the summer. Mykola Gogol loved these places very much and visited the Kochubey estate.

Unfortunately, the building has not survived, but the last four oaks, 600-800 years old, have survived. The diameter of the trunks is 1.5-1.8 m, the height is 20-22 m.
