Pony.ai is a California-based robotics company that has the stated mission of building the safest and more reliable technology for autonomous vehicles. In 2018, the company had a soft launch involving vehicles using its technology that took place in Guangzhou. It also holds autonomous vehicle testing permits for California and Beijing.
The company's software is called "PonyAlpha" and is designed to be used in vehicles. Technology that is used includes LIDAR, RADAR, and cameras and is designed to detect obstacles, such as pedestrians or traffic, within 200 meters of the vehicle.
The company has launched an autonomous vehicle taxi service in China and another one California called "BotRide". Users can download a mobile application for both Android and iOS systems and request to be picked up for a taxi service. An autonomous Hyundai KONA Electric SUV with the company's technology will then pick up the users. Pony.ai has also partnered with Toyota to utilize the technology for its vehicles.
