Preface Ventures was founded in 2015 by Farooq Abbasi, who is both the founder and sole general partner of the firm. Before founding Preface Ventures, Abbasi was a founder of Diversity.vc; he worked with Costanoa Ventures, prior to which he worked at DN Capital and Mosaic Ventures.
Preface Ventures targets founders from enterprise infrastructure engineering backgrounds, particularly immigrants without pedigrees or social followings. Farooq Abbasi is passionate about diversity investments, and more than half of the companies in the firms' portfolio are immigrant-founded.
Preface Ventures focuses most of its deal-flow on outbound inquiries offered by an in-house algorithm called Klarman. The algorithm tracks around 8,000 people either working at companies in stealth or those working in engineering or product development at enterprise technology companies. Because Preface Ventures is a solo-partner firm, Farooq Abbasi works closely with limited partners in decision making around investments.
Preface Ventures investments are early-stage investments, with an investment between $250,000 to $750,000 for a seed round, or $500,000 to $1 million for a Series A rounds. The firm says it can offer more in follow-on rounds if necessary. The firm also helps investments build the financial and board reporting infrastructure of a company, spending up to 100 days with an investment company, and the firm helps develop introductions and relationships for their investments as necessary.
