Proterro

Proterro is a biotechnology company that develops and markets sugar feedstock. Cyanobacteria is used in a patented, fully integrated production system to produce cost-competitive products in the food, feed and energy industries. Proterro is partnered with leaders in those industries, and their partners specify molecule structures and purity standards for final products. Proterro’s system utilizes waste carbon dioxide, captured at its source and converts it into products such as sugars (industrial, food and specialty grade) and nutritionals (organic acids, amino acids, nutrients and vitamins). One product called PROTOSE sugar is a fortified sucrose that is used to produce commercial scale fuels and chemical through industrial fermentation methods.

Proterro engineered cyanobacteria from the group that includes Synechococcus and Synechocystis to secrete sucrose in a continuous, high-yield process, and the genetically modified cyanobacteria are patent protected. The engineered bacteria require only water, carbon dioxide, sunlight and nutrients to produce sucrose. The sucrose can be used in biofuels and biochemicals.
