Pyatigorsk is located in the southern part of Russia in the Stavropol Krai territory. Its name means "five mountains" in Russian, and the city sits at the foot of Mount Mashuk, which is located in the North Caucasus. The city has mild winters and hot summers due to its location. It is a resort city due to its numerous natural mineral springs that total more than forty in the area.
It is stated that Pyatigorsk was founded in 1780 under the name Goryachevodsk, which means "the town of hot water." In 1830, the city name was changed to its current name. Pyatigorsk was linked to Moscow via railway in 1894, allowing for the city to continue to grow with notable buildings constructed, such as the city theater and Pyatigorsk Balneological Institute. During World War II, Pyatigorsk was captured by the German army and later liberated by the Soviet Army. In 2010, it became the center of the North Caucasian Federal District.
