REN TV was founded in 1991 as an independent production company. The first program of REN TV is Eldar Ryazanov's TV project "The Irony of Fate, or Merry Christmas". In 1997, the television company began its own broadcasting in Russia, creating a nationwide television network. In the same year, REN TV aired the oldest project of the TV channel "Military Secret".
