Navy medical personnel operating in forward areas require portable field refrigeration units to keep blood products, vaccines and reagents within strict temperatures. The existing Medical refrigeration system is large, bulky and energy inefficient that limits its use in many applications. In the Phase II, program RINI developed two Portable Expeditionary Cold Storage System (PECSS) prototypes, a Refrigerator and Freezer each which are 3X smaller and 2.5X lighter than the currently fielded system. The PECSS can remain cold for several days on a battery charge or can be powered by 120AC, 12-24DC or solar power. In the proposed sequential PII, RINI will make improvements to several subcomponents of the PECSS, improve manufacturability and add new capabilities required by the USMC. Production ready prototypes will be delivered at the end of the contract.
