The league was established in 2001 as Russian Football Premier League and was rebranded to the current name in 2018. There are 16 teams in the competition.

Since the foundation of the league, the Championship has been held annually under the "spring-autumn" system, since September 13, 2010, at a meeting of the RFU Executive Committee, it was decided to switch to the "autumn-spring" system.
