Radia Perlman is an American computer scientist born on December 18, 1951, in Portsmouth, Virginia . She received her education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) , where her doctoral advisor was David D. Clark . Perlman holds citizenship in the United States .
Perlman's notable contributions to the field of computer science include the development of the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and her work on computer literacy . In recognition of her achievements, she was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2016 .
