Founded 1997 in Tokyo, Japan by Hiroshi Mikitani, it invests in seed, series A, corporate rounds, and post-IPO equity rounds. Its portfolio companies include Point, Sider, AirCloset, Synadia Communications, and Plaid. As of March 2020, Rakuten has made 70 investments. Their most recent investment was on September 24, 2019, when Everledger raised $20M. Rakuten has had 11 exits, the most notable of which include Lyft, Careem, and WePay. The company has raised three funds, their latest being Rakuten Global Investment Fund. This fund was announced on April 12, 2016 and raised a total of $200M.
