John A. Catsimatidis started the Red Apple group when he bought a small grocery store on Manhattan's Upper West Side and named it Red Apple. This store grew into the Red Apple Group, which owns the chain of Gristede's Supermarkets in New York. Other subsidiaries of the group include United RefiningUnited Refining, Red Apple Food Marts, Kwik Fill, real estate holdings across New York, New Jersey and Florida, an aircraft leasing operation and the Hellenic Times newspaper.
