A direct sequel to Resident Evil: Retribution (2012), it is the sixth installment in the Resident Evil film series and the final installment in the original series, which is based on the video game series of the same name. In the film, Alice and her friends are betrayed by a clone of Albert Wesker, who gathers the entire forces of Umbrella into one final strike against the apocalypse survivors.
A sixth and final film in the series, subtitled The Final Chapter, was announced to be in development by Sony Pictures, which was filmed in 2D and was post-converted to stereoscopic 3D. Continuing from the previous film, Anderson expressed his desire for the final film to "come full circle", bringing back characters, themes and the environment of the Hive from the first film. Principal photography commenced on September 18, 2015 in South Africa.
