Richard Axel (born July 2, 1946) is an American biochemist, known for his contributions in the understanding of the olfactory system. Born in Brooklyn, Axel attended Stuyvesant High School, Columbia University, and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In 2004, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the olfactory system. Richard Axel is also a co-founder of the biotechnology company Kallyope.
