Robert J. Flaherty (born Robert Joseph Flaherty, February 16, 1884 –July 23, 1951) was a film director, screenwriter, editor, film producer, camera operator, explorer, cartographer, cinematographer. He was born in Iron Mountain, Michigan and held United States citizenship. Flaherty was educated at Upper Canada College and the University of Michigan.
Flaherty was married to Frances H. Flaherty. He directed numerous films, including Nanook of the North, The Pottery Maker, Moana, Man of Aran, Oidhche Sheanchais, Elephant Boy, The Land, and Louisiana Story. Some of his notable works are White Shadows in the South Seas, Tabu, and The Titan: Story of Michelangelo. His films spanned genres such as docudrama, documentary film, drama, and comedy.
Flaherty received several awards during his career, including the BAFTA Award, British Academy Film Awards, and the Golden Lion. He was also referred to as "a fossil scout who has brought many benefits".
He passed away in Dummerston, Vermont on July 23, 1951.
