Robert W. Holley (1922-1993) was an American biochemist and chemist known for his work in the field of molecular biology . He was born in Urbana, Illinois, and held citizenship in the United States . Holley completed his high school education at Urbana High School (Illinois) and then pursued higher education at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, Weill Cornell Medicine, and Cornell University .
In 1968, Holley was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his research on the structure of transfer RNA . He passed away on February 11, 1993, in Los Gatos, California .
