Robert Wise (born Robert Earl Wise on September 10, 1914, in Winchester, Indiana) was an American film director, producer, and editor. He is best known for his work on various film genres, including science fiction, noir, horror, westerns, war films, comedies, and dramas.
Wise studied at Connersville High School and Franklin College in Indiana. He began his film career at RKO as a sound and music editor. He was the editor of the critically acclaimed film "Citizen Kane" and later directed the first Star Trek motion picture, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture."
Some of his other notable works include the films "Bachelor Mother," "5th Ave Girl," "My Favorite Wife," "Dance, Girl, Dance," "The Devil and Daniel Webster," "Seven Days' Leave," "Bombardier," "The Fallen Sparrow," "The Iron Major," and "The Fantasy Film Worlds of George Pal."
Wise won several prestigious awards during his career, including the National Medal of Arts, Directors Guild of America Award, Academy Awards, AIC Lifetime Achievement Award, and Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. He also won the Academy Award for Best Director for his work on "The Sound of Music."
Robert Wise passed away on September 14, 2005, in Los Angeles.
