Roelof F. Botha (born September 19 , 1973 ) is a South African actuary , venture capitalist and company director .
He is a partner of Sequoia Capital and as of 2020 was on the boards of directors of MongoDB , Jawbone , Eventbrite , Evernote , Bird , Ethos , Mahalo , Natera , Nimbula , Square , Tokbox , Tumblr , Unity , Whisper and Xoom.
He has also worked with Assurer, FutureAdvisor, Instagram, Mixpanel and MuSigma.
He previously served on the board of directors of Meebo and YouTube before they were acquired by Google, as well as Weebly before they were acquired by Square.
Botha was born in Pretoria , South Africa, and moved to Cape Town with his parents at the age of six. He grew up in Hout Bay, a suburb of Cape Town, and studied at the Hoërskool Jan van Riebeeck.
In 2000 , Botha became PayPal 's Director of Corporate Development . He moved to the position of Vice President of Finance and was appointed CFO in September 2001. PayPal went public in February 2002 and was bought by eBay in October 2002.
Botha's father, also called Rulof, is an economist.
His uncle was rock musician Pete Botha.
His grandfather was Roelof Frederick "Pik" Botha, a South African politician who was the country's last foreign minister under the apartheid government and the first Minister for Minerals and Energy under Nelson Mandela.
