Roger Federer is a professional tennis player. He is one of the most decorated tennis players ever, having won a record-setting 20 Grand Slam singles championships, including a record 8 Wimbledon titles.
Federer was born on August 8, 1981 in Basel, Switzerland, to Swiss father Robert Federer and South African mother Lynette Du Rand. He holds both Swiss and South African citizenship. Federer began playing tennis at 8 years old, and became the national junior champion in Switzerland at age 14. After his victory, Federer was chosen to train at the Swiss National Tennis Center in Écublens. He joined the International Tennis Federation junior tennis circuit in 1996, and won the junior Wimbledon title and Orange Bowl two years later in 1998. Federer turned professional later that year.
