Rosenergoatom is a joint-stock company Russian State-Owned Enterprise (SOE). It is engaged in all stages of the life cycle of nuclear plants, as regards the selection of construction sites, project design, construction, commissioning, operation, decommissioning, and other operating functions. Rosenergoatom is the only Russian utility operating nuclear power plants. Its nuclear plants have the status of branches. It was established in 1992 and was reconstituted as a utility in 2001, as a division of SC Rosatom.
Rosenergoatom is responsible for all 10 nuclear power plants (NPPs) in Russia and the associated energy generating companies. In total, the 10 active Russian nuclear power plants operate 36 units (30 GW - installed capacity of NPPs):
- 20 nuclear power units with water-water energetic reactors
- 14 channel reactors
- 2 fast neutron with sodium cooling reactors.
Russia currently has 4 more nuclear power plants under construction at sites near Leningrad, the Baltic region, Novovoronezh, and Pevek.
