Ruby Dee was an accomplished actor, screenwriter , playwright , poet , journalist , film producer , and activist born on October 27, 1922, in Cleveland . She held citizenship in the United States . Dee was educated at both Hunter College and Hunter College High School .
Throughout her career, Dee received numerous awards, including the Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album , Primetime Emmy Award , Daytime Emmy Awards , NAACP Image Award , and The Kennedy Center Honors .
Dee was known for her work in various notable films such as "A Raisin in the Sun" , "The Jackie Robinson Story" , "Edge of the City" , "Do the Right Thing" , "American Gangster" , and "Jungle Fever" .
She passed away on June 11, 2014, in New Rochelle, New York .
