Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK) is the largest coal company in Russia and one of the leading coal and energy companies in the world, one of the five largest suppliers of coal to the global coal market.
The company was founded in 2001 and is headquartered in Moscow with divisions in the regions. Full official name - Joint Stock Company "Siberian Coal Energy Company" (JSC "SUEK")
It was established in 2001. In the early 2000s, against the backdrop of collapsing mines and widespread strikes of miners caused by unpaid wages and poor working conditions, MDM Group invested the funds earned in the banking business in the acquisition of mines and mines, many of which were in crisis. SUEK was based on the idea of consolidating disparate coal enterprises throughout Russia and creating a large industry holding company.
The formation began on the basis of coal mining enterprises in the Chita region, Buryatia and Irkutsk region. In 2002, SUEK included enterprises in Khakassia and the Krasnoyarsk Territory, in 2003 in the Khabarovsk and Primorsky Territories and in the Kemerovo Region. In 2004, coal and a number of Siberian energy companies were merged on the basis of SUEK.
The assets acquired during the formation of SUEK were problematic – the production capacity of the enterprises did not exceed 30 million tons per year, 70,000 miners were employed at the enterprises, but productivity was low, and coal exports were practically absent.
Equipment wear averaged 90%. In the early years of the company's existence, a total modernization of SUEK assets was carried out, large debts were repaid, wages and taxes were paid to employees, a large-scale modernization program was launched, which provided for the re-equipment of all production units of the company with modern equipment and machinery. In 2006, SUEK became the largest coal exporter in Russia. SUEK has built new modern bulk terminals and modernized seaports. In 2008, the Vaninsky bulk terminal in the Khabarovsk Territory, one of the largest coal ports in Russia, began operation.
The company built Russia's first station for processing coal mine methane into thermal energy as part of the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol agreements - in 2008, a power plant running on coal mine methane was launched at the Kirov SUEK mine. The first intelligent dispatch center in Russia was built, which monitors the work of all enterprises and tracks the location and well-being of miners underground.
In 2011, the energy assets were transferred from SUEK to the Siberian Generating Company (SGC).
In 2011, SUEK began development of the new Apsatskoye field in the Trans-Baikal Territory. In 2012, SUEK became a major shareholder of Murmansk Commercial Sea Port JSC. In 2013, the construction of the second module of the Montenegrin Processing Plant in Khakassia and the second stage of the factory at the Kirov mine in Kuzbass is being completed.
In 2014, the Chegdomyn processing plant was put into commercial operation at the Urgalskoye field in the Khabarovsk Territory. In 2015, an enrichment module is being launched at the Taldinskaya-Zapadnaya 1 mine in Kemerovo, which helped bring the share of enriched coal to 55% in the total portfolio. In 2016, SUEK is engaged in the development of a high-quality coal mining site "Nikolsky" in Buryatia and the Trans-Baikal Territory. The reserves of the deposit amount to 270 million tons. In 2017, SUEK launches into commercial operation the Nekkovy mine in Primorsky Krai, the Pravoberezhny mine in Khabarovsk Krai and the new Mainline mining site at the A.D. Ruban mine in Kuzbass.
In 2018, SUEK will consolidate SGK, which has become one of the largest producers of electricity and heat in Siberia and one of the country's leading energy holdings for the production of thermal energy. In October 2019, SUEK closed the acquisition of Reftinskaya GRES. The purchase of the power plant allowed the company to expand its activities in the Urals and strengthen its position as one of the leading energy companies in Russia.
SUEK produces 110 million tons of coal per year, and the volume of its proven coal reserves is 7.5 billion tons (No. 5 in the world).
SUEK's coal, energy and transport enterprises employ 70,000 people in 12 Russian regions.
SUEK unites 8 mines and 19 sections in Siberia and the Far East, producing about 24% of coal in Russia (as of 2019). The mining, processing, energy, service and transport assets of SUEK are located in 12 regions of Russia. In particular, the company owns the Borodinsky mine named after M. I. Shchadov, Nazarovsky, Berezovsky coal mines in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, coal mining enterprises in Kuzbass, the Republics of Khakassia and Buryatia, Primorsky, Zabaikalsky and Khabarovsk Territories.
