Sacha Baron Cohen was born in Hammersmith, London to a Jewish family. He is the youngest of three brothers. Father, Gerald Baron Cohen, was a menswear shop owner and a native of London; mother, Daniella Naomi Baron Cohen (née Weiser), a physiotherapy instructor, was born in Israel. On the paternal side, the family was of Belarusian origin (Sasha's great-great-grandfather, jeweler Chaim Cohen left the territory of modern Belarus in the 1880s and already in Cardiff married Amelia Cohen, who immigrated from the Kingdom of Poland); mother's ancestors lived in Germany. The artist's great-grandfather, Moishe (Morris) Cohen, added the middle name Baron to his original surname and settled in Whitechapel, becoming the first generation in the family to switch from Yiddish to English.
