Salo Science is a conservation technology company accelerating solutions to climate change and biodiversity loss. They use satellite data, artificial intelligence and ecological modeling to develop analytical tools that identify conservation opportunities, monitor ecosystem health & predict environmental change.
Satellites provide critical data for identifying and tracking natural climate solutions. Salo utilizes deep learning based analytics to extract useful insights from satellite imagery to allow organizations to scale-up conservation, restoration, and other sustainable land management activities.
Salo's mission is to enable sustainable ecosystem management by improving how landowners invest in conservation. They offer consulting services for analyzing specific areas, a cartography service for custom mapping & a monitoring service for tracking change over time.
The company is involved in projects such as:
- California Forest Observatory - using data and technology to reveal where and when communities face greater wildfire risk, and to support the planning and execution of wildfire mitigation and forest resilience strategies.
- Identifying Tree Mortality - Severe pest and drought-driven mortality have taken a dramatic toll on the forests of the Sierras. Salo seeks to improve sustainable harvesting practices and reduce wildfire hazards by monitoring mortality.
- Monitoring Forest Restoration - Improving timber harvest management to mitigate carbon emissions
Salo was founded in 2016 and is based in San Franciso. The founders are CEO David Marvin and CTO Christopher Anderson.
