Sandra Oh is a producer, writer, and actress. She was born in Ontario, Canada in 1971 to parents Joon Soo and Young Nam, who had emigrated from South Korea to study subjects such as economics and biochemistry. She began performing as a child, and by the age of fifteen, she was working as a professional entertainer with television and commercial appearances as well as performing at the theater. After she graduated from high school, Oh attended the National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal.
Oh made her major debut performance on television in 1993 when she was cast as the lead role in The Diary of Evelyn Lau, a biopic about a troubled young woman who overcame the odds and became a novelist. Oh was nominated for a Best Actress Gemini, and she won the Cannes FIPA d'Or Best Actress Award.
Oh moved to Los Angeles in 1996 and was cast in the HBO show Arli$$ until 2002. She also worked on other TV shows, such as Six Feet Under and Judging Amy. Oh started getting cast in American movies around the same time, including Under the Tuscan Sun, Bean, and The Red Violin.
In 2004, Oh acted in the award-winning movie Sideways, and the following year, she was cast as one of the lead actresses in Grey's Anatomy. In 2006, Oh won several awards for her work on the show, including a Golden Globe and a SAG Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series. She starred in the show until its tenth season.
Oh started acting in her next award-winning TV show, Killing Eve, in 2018. She made history as the first woman of Asian descent to be nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Oh continued to make history that year when she was first woman of Asian descent to host the Golden Globes and also win the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Drama. The series ended in 2022.
In 2023, Oh starred in Quiz Lady, which was released on Hulu. She also narrated the Canadian audible series Anne of Green Gables.
