"Black Leg" Sanji, born as Vinsmoke Sanji, is the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates. He is the fifth member of the crew and the fourth to join, doing so at the end of the Baratie Arc.
Born as the third son and fourth child of the Vinsmoke Family (thus making him a former prince of the Germa Kingdom), he disowned his family twice, once in his youth and again after reuniting with them as an adult. After fleeing the Vinsmokes as a child, he eventually entered the care of Zeff as the sous chef of the Baratie, where he would remain until he met Monkey D. Luffy, who convinced him to join his crew.
His dream is to find the rumored chef's paradise, All Blue, which is where East Blue, West Blue, North Blue, and South Blue meet, along with their wildlife. He is one of the top three fighters of the Straw Hats, alongside Luffy and Zoro.
Overview
Sanji is one of the crew's top four fighters along with Luffy, Zoro, and Jinbe. He currently has the third highest bounty in the crew after Luffy and Jinbe. Alongside Jinbe, Sanji was one of two members of the crew who fight while relying solely on pure might and skills without any weapons or Devil Fruits in combat, prior to receiving his raid suit.
While Luffy often fights the strongest enemies, Sanji and Zoro often ends up fighting against enemies considered the second or third primary treat. On occasion, he would take on an opponent weaker than Zoro's; an example of this being Sanji fighting against Jabra of CP9, who had a slightly lower power level than Kaku, who lost to Zoro. A notable moment as the Enies Lobby Arc introduced the Doriki, the one instance in the series that the opponent's strengths have been measured numerically.
However, Sanji's and Zoro's opponents could be often characterized as matching (or countering) their particular fighting styles: such as his fight against another leg-style martial artist, Mr. 2, during the Arabasta Arc, while Zoro fought against, Mr. 1, an assassin who ate a Paramecia that makes him a Bladed Human resistant to swords.
Although, Sanji and Zoro would usually let their rivalry impede their fighting performances, they have proven to be a near-unstoppable force if they agree to cooperate for the battle.
As the member of the infamous Vinsmoke Family, Sanji was raised and trained from an early age alongside the first rest of his siblings in warfare and combat. Similar to his three brothers, their father modified them, while their mother was still pregnant with them, designed to endow them with superhuman abilities. However, due to Sora's own attempt at ensuring her sons would keep their emotions using a counter-drug, Sanji's genetic modifications were repressed, and he was born a normal human.
Appearance
Sanji is a slim, yet muscular, long-legged man with blond hair which he keeps brushed over one side of his face. Before the timeskip, this was the left side. After the two year timeskip, he switched his hairstyle so that it covers the right side. It also appears that Sanji's hair is less straight and scruffier after the timeskip.
Among Sanji's physical traits are his distinctive eyebrows. Both form a spiral but at different ends. His right eyebrow forms a spiral at the outer end, while his left eyebrow forms a spiral at the inner end. However, his eyebrows curled in the opposite direction from his siblings, which curls in a counterclockwise direction. Sanji's eyebrows curled in a clockwise direction . As his dormant genetic modifications awakened, Sanji's eyebrows switched to curling in the same direction as his siblings'
While Sanji's eyes usually seem black, he was depicted with grey-blue eyes in the anime at the beginning of Thriller Bark Arc. This is shown again during the Punk Hazard Arc, when Trafalgar Law switched Sanji into Nami's body, and her usual brown eyes became grey-blue in color.
Sanji almost always wears a black, double-breasted suit with golden buttons and a tie together with a long-sleeved buttoned shirt of varying colors, usually orange, blue, turquoise, or black, with or without pinstripes. His outfit changes on a more frequent basis than most of the crew.
As a child, Sanji wore a yellow shirt with the number "3" on it, white pants, brown boots, and a light yellow bandana around his neck. His hair was styled in the opposite manner as it is in the present.
Personality
One of Sanji's most easily noticeable characteristics is the kind, calm, cool, and collected manner in which he carries himself. He tends to speak in a very composed manner, even in dire situations, and rarely acts without thinking. His demeanor in a lot of ways can be compared to that of a secret agent. This is amplified by the fact that he tends to wear a suit, very often enjoys a smoke, and in the anime, they tend to play smooth music with jazzy undertones when he speaks. He quite often makes comedic exceptions to this, such as when in the presence of beautiful women, or when angered by a crew member.
Like Zoro, he is more perceptive than he seems, and often tells people what they need to hear instead of what they want. Hence, he is seen as one of the more hardened members of the crew. For example, when the Straw Hats first meet Laboon and learn that the whale had been waiting for 50 years for a reunion with his crew, it is Sanji who immediately (and correctly) points out that Laboon's crew is most likely dead. Sanji does possess an optimistic and idealistic side. His dream is to find a sea that even other cooks consider mythical. Furthermore, even after the abuse, he experienced from his family as a child, he held out hope that they may have changed for the better. However, this hope proves to be completely futile, but he was angrier than surprised at the revelation, showing that he maintains a healthy sense of skepticism even at his most hopeful. Sanji also showed a high degree of faith in his fiancée, Charlotte Pudding, and was horrified and downcast when he discovered her true motive.
Like Franky (and unlike Zoro), Sanji is not afraid to show his emotions when the moment calls for it and is entirely capable of crying or losing his temper, which results in Sanji's short fuse and subsequent beatings of most villains (and Luffy). In fact, a running gag has appeared since Sanji's fight with Jabra, during which he stated that when he gets angry, he "heats up". After this fight, when Sanji gets particularly angry at a villain, he appears to burst into flames. This occurs with both Absalom and Duval, though the latter example appears only in the anime. It is also seen when Luffy states nonchalantly that he is friends with Boa Hancock, considered to be the most beautiful woman, when she appears to prevent a Marine ship from sinking the Thousand Sunny.
Despite his hardened outlook on life, Sanji does not object to acting foolishly on certain occasions, like dancing with the more immature members of the crew (Luffy, Usopp, Chopper and Brook), or acting childishly excited in certain situations (like when they first visited Skypiea) and he was also the crewmember who enjoyed going to Fish-Man Island the most as he was seen partying with mermaids. He is also one of those who believes that afros give power.
Sanji seems to enjoy relaxing with a cup of tea (his favorite drink) as seen when he entered Mr. 3's wax house and helped himself to Miss Golden Week's tea set. This habit came up again in Enies Lobby when Kalifa distracted Sanji by offering him tea; in another instance, Sanji angrily refused Bege when he was offered something to drink while trapped inside of Bege's body.
Since at a young age, Sanji has a habit of saying "shit" or "shitty" when describing something. While the Japanese word for feces, "kuso", is not specifically an expletive, Sanji's manner of speech makes the term sound brash. For example, he might call a person he especially does not like a "shitty bastard" or something along those lines (such as his personal nickname for Zeff, "shitty geezer"), but he also described something pleasant to him, like being alone with Nami, as "shitty fantastic" and "the shitty best". In the Funimation dub, this habit is downplayed to swearing that is less offensive.
Intelligence
Sanji is also able to think one step ahead in most situations, making him extremely clever compared to his other crewmates. The first example is when dealing with Baroque Works he fooled Crocodile into thinking he was Mr. 3 and lying that he killed the Straw Hats which allowed the crew to be unhindered by the criminal organization until they reached Arabasta. Later on when the rest of the crew was captured by the Shichibukai, Sanji (with the help of Chopper) outwitted him using a Den Den Mushi. This was very impressive as Crocodile was known for his scheming nature. Another example is when Nico Robin was captured by the CP9, he somehow knew (or was able to deduce) that the CP9 were going to take Robin to the station. He was seen at the station hiding before the CP9 even got there. When these events go as he planned, he has a habit of saying 'Bingo!'.
Amorous Nature
He is extremely amorous, constantly flirting with any attractive woman he sees, earning him the nickname "ero-cook". Even as a child, while working in Baratie, Sanji would become love-struck with attractive female customers and end up making mistakes in the process much to Zeff's irritation. In fact, he claimed that Nami was 98.72% of the reason he joined Luffy's crew in the first place. Since, and a while after, this romantic nature is a hassle for the rest of the crew in times of crisis. Returning to Sabaody Archipelago after his two years on Momoiro Island, Sanji became even more perverted due to not having seen a woman in two years, making lewd faces when he so much as thought of beautiful women (primarily his crewmates, Nami and Robin) and acted strangely when he got close to 'real' women, causing others to question about his health.
He's also known to show jealousy towards others when their luck with women appears better than his, with an example of this being his reaction upon learning that Luffy spent his two years during the time skip on Amazon Lily and being very close to both Boa Hancock and the mermaid Shirahoshi, as well as his reaction to Momonosuke continuously being allowed to go places like the women's room that Sanji himself would be prohibited. He is also amorous toward females of different humanoid species such as mermaids, giants and minks.
Sanji considers himself handsome and charming, often comparing himself to a fairytale prince (fitting since he is actually a prince). This trait is rarely been noted by others, though there are times where ladies are interested in the cook, like after rescuing Cocoyasi Village from the Arlong Pirates a whole group of women gathered around him (anime), the female bounty hunters at Whisky Peak and the female members of the Foxy Pirates also took an interest in him (but both of these times they were merely fooling him, making him drop his guard) and more recently, the mermaids of Fish-Man Island were very captivated with the cook and played with him in the water causing Sanji to cry with happiness. At other times when Sanji is full of himself, he tends to be brought sharply back to earth by the people around him (such as being called the "Prince of Dumb-ass Kingdom" by Zoro, prompting Sanji to attack him).
Sanji is shown to sometimes act like a jerk to anyone who is not a romantic interest. Unlike Nami and Robin and other attractive women, Sanji will not lend his chivalrous assistance to his fellow male crewmates when they ask for it on the ship and will even react rudely to their cries for help, but this is rarely the case. He was more willing to assist them as they were chased by a Pacifista, thinking they'll die if he did not aid them.
Despite his extremely perverted nature, Sanji has some degree of self-control, stemming from his loyalty to his crew, as is shown by the fact that in spite of being attracted to Pudding, he sternly refused to marry her and thereby decided to let her down gently. Though he is capable of self-control, Sanji can still allow his extreme lust to control him as in spite of his knowing about Pudding's malicious nature as well as her intention to murder him, Sanji still found himself deeply captivated by Pudding's beauty and seductive words and physically struggled with himself. However, when the moment called for it, he was stoic when Pudding tried several times to assassinate him, disregarding her feeble taunts and suggested to her that she was lying to herself.
Sanji is conscious of his romantic nature but feels no shame throwing himself at beautiful women. When forced to agree with the marriage with Pudding for the sake of his loved ones, he told himself to act like his old romantic-side "love cook" despite feeling the grief of being separated from his friends and the danger they were in.
During his time on Momoiro Island, Sanji showed his resentment to putting on a dress and losing his manhood. He bluntly declared to Ivankov that he is a man among men who was born to love the ladies and not to be friends with them. To this end, Sanji resisted becoming an okama for two long years.
Sanji will often get so caught up in what he calls a "hurricane of love" that he becomes downright delusional. He often imagines himself bursting in on a horse to save Nami or Robin. At Water 7, he went overboard by not only leaving Nami a confidential letter, but defeating its purpose by writing Nami a very obvious message for her and only her at the Blue Station when he went off to sneak onto the Puffing Tom, which said that whoever else read it were all idiots, managing to annoy Nami once she spotted it.
Whenever he prepares a meal or a drink for his female crewmates, he dislikes it when his male crewmates start griping for not receiving any other food from him and then bickers at them to make their own food or tells them they were undeserving. If they try to sneak food, he is also quick to punish them, especially Luffy, with whom he has gone to great lengths to protect the fridge from being raided on the ship.
At Wano Country, Sanji was given the task of using his cooking to gather Kin'emon's allies, but he instead used his cooking solely to attract women, managing to irritate Nami when she saw this. Later on, he was more interested in hearing Robin's opinions about the taste of his soba noodles and snarling at Franky when he was making a suggestion on how to attract samurai.During the raid on Onigashima, Sanji immediately shifted his focus to finding prostitutes after coming across a brothel despite the raid being a pivotal moment in the Kozuki revolution. However, Sanji became focused on the raid again to save Momonosuke from execution and to prevent Luffy from wasting his strength on needless fights.
As an inveterate womanizer he refused to offer submission for Black Maria screaming that he will love all women.
Physical Abilities
“ Blueno, don't underestimate that guy! He doesn't have a bounty... But he's likely one of their main fighters! ”
Due to years of extremely hard training under Zeff since childhood, Sanji has gained extraordinary superhuman physical prowess, speed, and agility, which enables him to use an array of handstands for a kick-based martial art, which makes him immensely versatile in combat.
Strength
Sanji has immense physical strength. In his very first appearance, he held Fullbody up by the neck unsupported with one hand before even displaying his lower body strength. In the Arlong Park Arc, he was able to stop Kuroobi from killing Genzo and Nojiko in the water by grabbing onto his leg despite the natural advantage and strength a fish-man receives when submerged. At Little Garden, he hauled a dead Tyrannosaurus Rex through the jungle and back to the Merry with little effort. In the anime Ocean's Dream Arc, Sanji was able to carry the Beli.png300,000,000 worth of solid gold in a sack over his shoulder, something Nami could barely drag across the ground. In Skypiea, when Gan Fall was explaining the Dials, Sanji was shown to be able to lift a huge sledgehammer that appeared to weigh several tons and used it to test the Dial. If the Dial had not absorbed the impact, Sanji would likely smash a hole through Merry's deck.
After Luffy and Usopp dueled in Water 7, Sanji was able to easily restrain Chopper in Heavy Point from going to treat Usopp's injuries, in Enies Lobby Sanji alongside Zoro could catch three cannonballs (using Luffy's body) and throw them back with enough strength to destroy a Marine battleship. Sanji could hold Nami above his head and keep her balanced while receiving countless attacks to his body from Absalom. In Zou, Sanji was shown lifting a huge pile of wounded minks with little help. Another example of his physical might is seen when he was able to hold Absalom in place by gripping onto his leg, despite the latter's reinforced and heavy muscular structure and being struck multiple times while doing so. After he gained fully awakened genetic enhancements from his Raid Suit, Sanji's constitution evolved with genetically enhanced physical might, gaining a massive increase to his already extremely powerful strength, exerting immense amount of force in his kicks with only moderate effort, knocking Queen in his immensely heavy Brachiosaurus hybrid form flying through several walls in the Pleasure Hall, breaking his advanced cybernetic arm while counterattack his grappling attack. A fully enraged kick from Sanji's newfound strength and Ifrit Jambe even send Queen flying far away breaking through the ceiling of Kaido's mansion into the air off of Onigashima.
Durability and Endurance
Sanji's endurance is immense. Even as a child when he was still considered physically weak, he was able to survive the brutal beatings by his three super-humanly strong brothers on a regular basis. Combined with the years of extremely intense physical training under Zeff into his young adulthood, Sanji's body became tremendously tough. He was able to survive decompression when Kuroobi forced him down through the water in Arlong Park's very deep swimming pool as well as taking head-on attacks like Kuroobi's Fish-Man Karate punches. Sanji was able to survive Enel's "El Thor", an attack so powerful it disintegrated a normal man earlier in the arc and took out the great snake Nola, but Sanji withstood the lightning blast at point-blank range and was still able to stand and mock the Logia user before collapsing.
He was caught off guard and almost beaten to death by Kalifa after being affected by her Devil Fruit powers, but later when he was set free from them, he could still fight against Jabra to the point of even receiving half of the latter's "Gekko Jushigan" just before counter-attacking them with his kicks and even winning the face-off. He was stabbed in the back by Absalom with a knife long enough to go through his chest and still manage to defeat him with relative ease (something Zoro in a similar situation was not able to do when he was stabbed by Buggy).
Along with Zoro, he has also shown himself to be resilient enough to be able to take Bartholomew Kuma's "Ursus Shock" attack head-on, despite having just endured an exhausting battle with the giant zombie Oars, and still remain conscious afterward, before being knocked out by Zoro. Later at the Sabaody Archipelago, Sanji survived a Pacifista laser beam being shot through his chest.
After the timeskip, Sanji's endurance also increased. He is also now able to withstand pressures of over 5000 feet underwater without a coating, a depth that would have crushed a submarine. He was also seen being able to take direct punches from both Jinbe and Luffy to the head, from both sides simultaneously, with relatively minor injuries (though left bleeding on the ground). While Nami was inside his body, it also displayed enough endurance to withstand a direct explosion from Caesar's Gastanet, and moments later after recovering his body, he could still fight on par with Vergo.
During his confrontation with Donquixote Doflamingo near Green Bit, Sanji only suffered minor injuries from the Warlord's initial attacks. Sanji is more recently shown to be able to withstand the powerful attacks from his family, as seen by his recovering quickly from Judge's spear attacks as well as his enduring Niji's electrical blows. Sanji can tolerate a massive amount of pain, having learned to withstand relentless beatings by his brothers during his childhood. Even when injured; as seen when his right fibula was fractured by Vergo and, despite initially reacting to the pain, he continued fighting him with his injured leg and did not show any more signs of discomfort afterward.
Another example was when his swollen face was veiled by a gelatinous mask, and he remained unfazed when Nami had slapped his unhealed face. Sanji even shrugged off a bullet wound to the arm while protecting Luffy from Charlotte Oven's army on Cacao Island and did not notice it until Chopper pointed it out. Even after getting tortured by Black Maria, Sanji was able to recover and reenter the main fray, surviving the combined onslaught of All-Stars King and Queen, only commenting it was difficult fighting both of them at once. After his genetic enhancements fully awakened, his overall durability and endurance immensely increased, combined with his exoskeleton, allow him to resist extremely powerful assaults that would have been lethal even for his previous self, such as a strike from Queen's large sword to the head breaking it instead, multiple bullets to the head even without Haki. He also took head on Queen's Henry Queen and Winch Queen attacks without flinching. Most prominently, his newly gained durability and exoskeleton allowed him to use a more powerful Ifrit Jambe, withstanding the unbearably intense flames and heat that it generates.
Speed and Agility
Sanji's speed, agility, and reflexes are tremendous. In fact, his speed rivals that of Brook and even Luffy's Gear Second. In his first fight against the Krieg Pirates, Sanji moved so fast he appeared like he was disappearing and reappearing. At Little Garden, Sanji avoided machine gun fire from Miss Friday and in Jaya, he dodged Mont Blanc Cricket's gunshot at point-blank range. Even when up against the lightning-fast CP9 and their formidable Rokushiki techniques, Sanji proved his mobility by countering Kalifa's Soru with ease and forced her to the ground, causing the assassin to marvel at how fast the cook was, and he mustered up enough centrifugal force to slightly breaking through the guarding power of Blueno's Tekkai with a single kick to the side. Sanji was able to dodge an onslaught of blows from Oars, causing Luffy's shadow to get annoyed.
Due to fleeing from the Okamas in the Kamabakka Kingdom for two years, Sanji's already impressive speed increased massively. Sanji was able to dodge Vergo's kick when it was centimeters from his face and in Dressrosa, he took out a sniper (who had Sanji in his crosshairs) who was 16 meters above the ground and claimed it was "nothing" to Viola. Sanji was confident that he could avoid a point-blank shot from Pudding and he proved fast enough to dodge Charlotte Katakuri's jelly bean projectile from several meters away, an exceptional feat as Katakuri is an extremely skilled Kenbunshoku Haki user and could not foresee Sanji being swift enough to dodge his shot and was surprised by Sanji's reaction.
Additionally, had Katakuri not interfered with the natural flow of events, Sanji would have dodged a point-blank gunshot from the priest, which is a further testament to his speed. While Pound was trying to defend Chiffon from Oven, Sanji was able to instantly kick Oven away and grab Chiffon with neither Pound nor Oven noticing. After awakening genetic enhancements, Sanji's speed and agility has tremendously increased, able to casually move so fast he as if he disappeared with mild effort like his brother Niji. He could attack Queen with Ifrit Jambe enhanced kicks numerous times with such overwhelming velocity the latter could not react at all.
Genetic Modifications
When Sanji was a child, he was weaker than his siblings (who always outpaced him) to the point that he was considered a disappointment and a failure to his family. This is due to the drug that his mother took during her pregnancy to ensure Sanji would still have his humanity, thus resulting in him without any apparent genetic enhancements much to Judge's fury.
However, during the Raid on Onigashima, Sanji noted after several uses of the Raid Suit that his body began to feel different, and even in some cases "better", which perplexed him early on during his fight with Queen.
Later on in his fight with Queen, Sanji angrily realizes that he might have awakened the same genetic enhancements as his siblings, gaining an Exoskeleton and superhuman physical constitution, including accelerated healing. After surviving almost being crushed to death, Sanji stood back up, even with all of his bones broken, shocking everyone as his body snaps back into place and reforms, after which Queen strikes Sanji with his sword, only for the sword to shatter against Sanji's head, with Sanji only feeling minor pain and annoyance as a result. He also withstood several bullets to the head by the Beasts Pirates without any injury.
After realizing his genetic enhancements finally started were the result of wearing his raid suit, he chose to accept his enhancements but not before destroying the canister to cut off his ties to the Vinsmoke Family permanently. Sanji has become fast enough to the point where he seemed to vanish right in front of Queen right before attacking him. As his enhancements were complete, Sanji has shown far greater power in his fighting style, able to knock down Queen with immense power and develops fighting techniques that would have been physically impossible for him to do before. He has not displayed the total lack of empathy associated with his brothers' genetic enhancements, as he was horrified when he thought he was responsible for hitting a woman as his powers were manifesting.
Black Leg Style
Under Zeff's strict tutelage Sanji became an extremely powerful master of a kick based martial art he created named the "Black Leg Style" which is a unique combination of Brazilian Capoeira, French Savate and Korean Taekwondo, able to use powerful kicks with supreme versatility. He has also stated that the reason he fights using is that he does not want to risk damaging his hands as he needs them to cook, thus instead of punches, Sanji incorporates handstands into the Black Leg Style. He is also able to use one-handed handstands, and execute consecutive back handsprings (as seen during his fight with Jabra) to augment the force and range of his kicks. He could easily overpower numerous enemies at once, such as pirates, Marines, and Government agents.
During the time he spent constantly running away from the Okama on the Momoiro Island, he developed both the "Blue Walk" and "Sky Walk", techniques similar to the Rokushiki's technique Geppo, enabling him to swim at great speeds (making him the best swimmer of the crew) and to move through the air (similar to flying), respectively. With "Blue Walk", Sanji can momentarily run underwater. Not only is he not slowed down by the weight of water (as he was during the Arlong Park Arc), Usopp stated that Sanji's speed underwater is on par with a fish-man, who are at their physical prime while underwater. Through the use of "Sky Walk", Sanji can leap to great heights and travel at incredible speed as he makes sonic booms in the air behind him. Sanji used Sky Walk to travel from downtown Dressrosa all the way to the edge of Green Bit to intercept Doflamingo in no time at all. In the Wano Country Arc, Sanji could carry Nami, Carrot, Chopper, and Brook simultaneously using Sky Walk.
Also after the timeskip, it has been shown that he can now utilize fire in his strikes similar to his Diable Jambe. This is partially due to the trauma Sanji endured from the last two years, so much so that simply reminding himself of it causes him to burst out in flames through sheer anger. He demonstrates this by easily defeating the gigantic fish-man Wadatsumi, using "Hell Memories" while in this mental state to engulf the massive foe in flames.
Due to his tremendous mastery of the Black Leg style, Sanji can defeat extremely strong and dangerously skilled martial art masters, such as Kuroobi of "Fish-Man Karate", Bon Kurei of "Okama Kenpo", Wanze of "Ramen Kenpo", and even Jabra an extremely powerful Rokushiki master of the "Tekkai Kenpo" and during his time on Kamabakka Kingdom, he managed to defeat all 99 Newkama Kenpo masters to steal the recipes of the Attack Cuisine. After two years of intensified training, Sanji is strong and skilled enough to hold his own against Vergo, whose own fighting style matched Sanji's easily, although he still had a hard time. While he was completely powerless against his genetically enhanced superhuman brothers in the past, he could now viciously overpower them without using his full strength. With a crescent kick, he sent Charlotte Oven, an extremely large man and one of the strongest members of the Big Mom Pirates, flying and crashing into a nearby building. He also knocked down Page One, an Ancient Zoan Devil Fruit user and one of the strongest Shinuchi. When donning his Raid Suit, Sanji could match a kick from All Star King with his own leg.
His training in a kick-based martial arts also grants him colossal leg strength, enabling him to break even the hardest materials and defeat the strongest enemies using the tremendous power of his kicks. He can easily destroy boulders and metal weapons and effortlessly overpower giant sea monsters such as Bananawani and Momoo. Sanji even managed to topple Oars, a monstrous giant, by kicking him in the foot. In an SBS, Oda stated that Sanji's kicking power is 21 Bats (the power to break 21 wooden bats in one kick).
After his two years of extremely rigorous training on Momoiro Island, which consists mainly of constantly running away from the Okamas for days regardless of the harshest weather, his leg strength vastly increased. He could break the neck of a Pacifista with only a kick, critically damaging it, and not showing any trouble afterward (something he was not able to do before the timeskip) or being able to break a Seastone cage just with kicks (as seen in Episode of Luffy). He could even smash the exoskeletons of genetically enhanced superhumans such as his brothers Niji and Yonji. His new strength was also shown when Sanji manages to fight on par and briefly overpower Vergo, a Marine Vice Admiral who was able to overpower and defeat Smoker, for a short period of time even after being wounded by attacks from Caesar Clown and having one of his legs broken. His physical power was later recognized by one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, Donquixote Doflamingo, who was forced to restrain Sanji's movements after the Straw Hat member landed several blows.
During the Whole Cake Island Arc, Sanji easily overpowered his brother Vinsmoke Yonji, a genetically enhanced Germa Commander, and emerge from the conflict without a scratch which is notable as their father stated Yonji's strength was formidable. Sanji was also able to match his father Vinsmoke Judge, the leader of Germa 66, in a duel before he was overwhelmed by the latter's advanced technology and underhanded moves. His sister Vinsmoke Reiju was in awe at how strong he had become since she last saw him, describing him as a "beast". When he kicked his older brother Niji in the face, the force of the kick not only dislocated his jaw but also sent him crashing into a wall. Sanji's attacks are even strong enough to make his captain, Monkey D. Luffy, briefly pass out when struck by them, something only Rob Lucci has accomplished before; albeit, he wasn't fighting back and Sanji has improved a significant amount since their clash against CP9. Later during the escape from the Tea Party, Sanji was able to counter an attack from Big Mom one of the strongest Pirates in the world with a Diable Jambe-enhanced kick alongside Luffy.
He could even lift a gigantic carriage carrying the giant-sized wedding cake along with the WC31, Chiffon, and Pudding and launch it to the top of the Nostra Castello. He also blocked Daifuku's genie naginata strike when the genie was half the size of the Sunny. At Wano Country, Sanji smashed Page One into the ground with a kick, while the latter was in his massive Spinosaurus form. He also managed to block a kick from the All Star King an enormous man while using his Raid Suit. He could kicked the All Star Queen with such overwhelming force to rotate his brachiosaurus neck at high speed, easily shattering Perospero's extremely hard candy arrows, and knocked out the latter on impact, whereas not even Chopper's Monster Point could inflict any significant damage.
As for using his actual "attacks", Sanji has a very large number of specific kicks and techniques he uses to fight with. It should be noted that he does not call out an attack name whenever he kicks someone or something, but for important events and fights, he usually will. Most of his attacks are said in French and are usually cooking/food terms related in some way to the specific portion of the opponent's body that he's targeting or to the nature of the attack itself. In the 4Kids English anime, the attacks are changed to be funny sounding, non-existent food items that have something to do with the target area of the attack.
Common attacks are "Mutton Shot" (Sanji jumps and flips, and kicks with all his might into the foe's mid-region or head) and "Anti-Manner Kick Course" (one of Sanji's most powerful kicks where he delivers a 180 degree vertical kick upward into a giant foe's torso or back).
Sanji's comedic finishing move "Parage Shoot", is a series of kicks directed at his opponent's face. This results in a rearrangement of the victim's facial structure, often turning them handsome or bishounen-like, as seen with Wanze and Duval.
Diable Jambe
In the Enies Lobby Arc, Sanji reveals a new ability - Diable Jambe, the power to heat his lower legs to a temperature so high that they glow bright red, by spinning rapidly in place, which causes his attack to be more powerful. "Diable" means "Devil" in French and it's also the name of a kitchen tool. It's probably also a reference to the "sauce à la diable", a French spicy sauce. "Jambe" means "Leg". The kanji used, 悪魔風脚, mean devil wind foot (風脚 - wind foot - is a play on the term kazaashi, meaning wind speed). The aforementioned attacks also have the word Diable Jambe preceding it (ex. "Diable Jambe: Flambage Shot"). The heat of his attacks is so high that contact for even a second could set a person ablaze. Sanji used this ability during his fight with Jabra, in which his normal attacks were not as effective due to his active usage of Tekkai. With the heat of his new ability, Sanji overcame his inability to smash through Tekkai by burning through it instead. By using the technique "Frit Assorti" in Diable Jambe against Oars, Sanji was able to effectively deflect his direct "Gomu Gomu no Bazooka" in order to protect Robin with a single kick.
His tolerance against fire is also astonishing, which would make sense since he is a cook. This would explain why he is able to utilize Diable Jambe without showing any signs of getting burned himself while the opponent gets incinerated at the receiving end. However, Oda has said that it does not damage him because while the Diable Jambe burns hot, Sanji's heart burns hotter. The first time Queen saw Sanji using Diable Jambe he thought it was an ability acquired by Germa 66's Genetic Modifications to which Sanji replied he's a completely normal person unlike any of his brethrens. Queen said only Lunarians can create fire at will like so but Sanji said it was his "passionate".
As revealed during the crew's battle against PX-4, it appears that Diable Jambe puts extreme stress upon Sanji's legs. After several uses of the technique and during the confrontation against PX-1, Sanji himself comments that if he were to use the attack one more time, his legs would break.[46] After his two-year of training and experience in "hell", Sanji's kicks became significantly more powerful, as seen in his fight with PX-7, where he critically damaged the Pacifista's neck with a single kick.
Diable Jambe has improved to the point that his entire leg is now enveloped in large flames. It is now so powerful and hot that even underwater, he is able to scorch one of the Kraken's tentacles with "Bien Cuit: Grill Shot", severely injuring it. Later at Gyoncorde Plaza, as he was airborne (Sky Walk), he executed another new move called "Poêle à Frire: Spectre", where he stomps his opponents repeatedly with high accuracy and speed.
Sanji's Diable Jambe was also able to counter his father's advanced battle gear (which is flame resistant) with ease and when Sanji was about to use "Poêle à Frire" against Judge, the Germa King was forced to resort to using a human shield to overpower his son. Later when forced to fight off his captain, Sanji's Diable Jambe "Concasse" was strong enough to make Luffy pass out when Sanji struck him with it. Later Sanji used "Crosse Strike" along with Luffy's Elephant Gun to counter a lightning attack from Charlotte Linlin.
Ifrit Jambe
During the Wano Country Arc, Sanji revealed Ifrit Jambe, a new enhanced version of Diable Jambe. It is the result from the awakening of his genetic enhancements combined with his trained Busoshoku Haki increasing his leg's strength and endurance. With this new technique, Sanji's legs can withstand much hotter temperature and are thus capable of generating much stronger flames, a feat he would have been unable to achieve without his newfound powers.
Haki
Kenbunshoku Haki
Kenbunshoku Haki is Sanji's speciality concerning Haki. During his stay on Kamabakka Kingdom, Sanji has trained his Kenbunshoku Haki to become an advanced master of it due to being on a constantly careful watch for the harassment from the Okamas day and night who sought to steal his manhood. He can sense the presence, strength, emotions, and intent of others, and was even able to dodge a jelly bean shot by Charlotte Katakuri despite Katakuri having a higher level of Kenbunshoku Haki.
Busoshoku Haki
It was stated by Luffy that Sanji possesses Busoshoku Haki after Law asked who could fight Caesar Clown, who is a Logia user. During the fight with his father, he blocked his spear by enhancing his right leg, much to Judge's surprise, although, he wasn't skilled enough to entirely defend himself.[59] Sanji's damaged Luffy despite his rubbery body when they fought on Whole Cake Island. Having awakened his dormant genetic enhancements, Sanji combined his sturdy exoskeleton and Busoshoku Haki, which enhanced his legs, allowing them to endure much hotter flames, resulting in the creation of Ifrit Jambe.
Weapons
While Sanji's policy as a chef is to preserve his hands for the sole purpose of cooking, he has been known to fight with an assortment of different items.
Swordsmanship
According to his father, Sanji was trained to use swords. However, due to Sanji's policy of only using his hands for cooking, it is unknown as to the extent of any skills he may retain. He may still retain a high level of skill at wielding swords and/or other bladed weapons, as shown by his superb skills in wielding knives for combat and on par with the most skilled swordsmen, a skill Sanji retained and continuously honed through use in cooking.
Raid Suit
Germa 66 had created a Raid Suit specifically designed for Sanji to use, which was secretly hidden and given to him as a parting gift during the Vinsmokes' assistance in his and Luffy's escape from Cacao Island. Sanji initially refused to put it on due to his hatred for his family, but ultimately donned it while at Wano Country.
The suit gives Sanji a black Germa outfit and cape with the number 3 on it, as well as jet-propelled boots. Uniquely, it also gives him a mask to wear over his nose and mouth, and slicks the front of his hair into two parts, one pointing up and one pointing down. Like the other Vinsmokes' Raid Suits, it grants Sanji the ability to fly and strengthen his kicks with propelled boots, and serves as an armor to protect him from attacks.
Its unique ability is that it allows Sanji to blend in perfectly with his environment, leaving him invisible to the human eye. This invisibility gives him a great advantage in battle, being able to land surprise attacks on opponents without them seeing him coming. He later uses this ability to sneak into a bathhouse and assist Nami, Robin, and Shinobu in escaping, and was also instrumental in rescuing Kozuki Momonosuke from the crucifix he was chained to during the raid on Onigashima.
The suit and its ability apparently cause Sanji to resemble a character known as Stealth Black, who is a member of the fictionalized version of Germa 66 in the comic strip Sora, Warrior of the Sea. Knowing that, Sanji rejected the name and named this form as O-Soba Mask (おそばマスク O-Soba Masuku?) instead. After realizing it awakened his dormant genetic enchantments, Sanji destroyed his raid suit to cut off his ties to the Germa Kingdom.
Other Weapons
Usopp's Special Salt Ball : Sanji was given salt balls by Usopp during the crew's adventure on Thriller Bark, for use in Zombie attacks. He used them to reveal Absalom's position after the zombie commander became invisible through the powers of the Suke Suke no Mi.
Sanji was seen pointing a pistol at Miss All Sunday during her first meeting with the Straw Hats, but he did not fire it (likely due to his chivalry). Later in Zou, he stole a rifle off one of the Fire Tank Pirates and used it to hold Caesar Clown hostage.
During the raid on Onigashima, Sanji used the bandaged Zoro as a blunt weapon against members of the Beasts Pirates.
Tactical and Informational Wit
Besides his strength, Sanji is also a skilled tactician. This was particularly evident in the Arabasta Saga, where he was responsible for both posing as Mr. 3 and fooling Crocodile into believing that he had killed the Straw Hats on Little Garden. Later, he posed as "Mr. Prince" to lure Crocodile out of Rain Dinners, where the Straw Hats were being held captive, so that he could break in and release them.
In the Skypiea Arc, when he and Usopp snuck onboard the Maxim in order to save Nami, Sanji took a detour and destroyed the ship's main engine. While the backup engines prevented the flying vessel from being crippled, Sanji's actions distracted Enel and bought Usopp time to get Nami off the ark.
During the Water 7 Arc, Sanji went off on his own and waited patiently at the train station, having discovered that only one train was due to depart before Aqua Laguna struck; he also deduced that, if Robin were to leave the island, the train would be the only means of doing so. With his instincts confirmed, Sanji left Nami a Baby Den Den Mushi and a letter of his intentions, though most of the letter was just some babble of his love for her, and even worse, the hiding place of the letter was very obvious marked with red paint, with large hearts for Nami and a threat for anyone else not to read it.
During the Enies Lobby Arc, he took over Usopp's fight with Jabra, reminding the unconfident Usopp that he was not useless and he can help protect Robin via sniping enemies from a distance, while Sanji himself was better suited for front-line fighting. Later, he shut the Gates of Justice to give the crew an opportunity to escape the overwhelming Marine forces gathered for the Buster Call.
In the Dressrosa Arc, he was the only one to figure out Law's true objective in establishing the Pirate Alliance, noting that Law was focusing too much on personally defeating Doflamingo instead of executing their plan to starve Kaidou of SMILES.
On Zou, when the Curly Hat Pirates were captured by Capone Bege and the Fire Tank Pirates, Sanji was able to release the others by sensing Nekomamushi was outside and throwing his friends out of Capone's body castle. He also ensured that the Fire Tank Pirates would not pursue the other Straw Hats by holding Caesar Clown hostage at gunpoint, after deducing that the new condition of capture on his second bounty ("Only Alive") guaranteed that the Fire Tank Pirates would not risk harming him in order to get Caesar off him, effectively outsmarting the extremely cunning master strategist Capone Bege.
Sanji also had a fondness for reading books when he was younger and knows of many legends, albeit mostly "Fairy-Tale" like in nature as opposed to Robin's "Historic" recollection of legends. He had already heard of the legendary ingredient, the Blue-Finned Elephant Tuna, before he even saw it, and he was also familiar with the tale of Mont Blanc Noland through the book King of Liars, Noland that he read as a child in North Blue. Furthermore, through reading an encyclopedia on Devil Fruits, he learned of the Suke Suke no Mi; however, since he was only interested in that particular fruit, what else he knows on Devil Fruits is currently unclear but he was shown not to be aware that Devil Fruit users would lose their ability to swim until Zeff told him.
Chivalric Sense
Sanji has demonstrated several times that he takes chivalry to such an extent that he can sense when a woman is in danger even when he is nowhere close to being within earshot, such as when Brogy approached Nami in Little Garden or when Tashigi was in tears after the betrayal of Vergo in Punk Hazard. However, this can be a weakness, as he refuses to attack a woman even at the cost of injury. This led to him sustaining serious damage against Kalifa until Nami showed up, and being at the mercy of Viola and her henchmen in Dressrosa. As a possible extension of this however, he seems to also be able to detect sincerity (or lack thereof) in women. In the latter example for instance, Sanji was able to tell that Viola truly felt despair under Doflamingo's control, despite her earlier boasting. When Nico Robin tried to leave the crew and discourage Sanji from chasing after her, he was able to tell that she was holding something back, later telling Chopper that "When a woman lies, a real man forgives her". Despite discovering the brutal deception and mockery that Charlotte Pudding put him through, he was able to see through her cruelty as a front to hide her own past misery, and confronted her of it the next day which caught her off guard.
Stealth Mastery
Sanji is immensely skilled at sneaking, rivaling that of Nami and Robin. After leaving the Germa Kingdom at a tender age, he was able to avoid detection for 13 years. As an adult, Sanji's skill was still prominent as he was the only Straw Hat to avoid detection from Baroque Works until the final battle in Alubarna. In the anime-only G-8 Arc, Sanji showed no trouble sneaking around the base and was forced to help his far less stealthy captain to avoid detection. At Water 7, Sanji infiltrated the Puffing Tom right under the noses of CP9, who were masters of espionage and stealth. Even Rob Lucci exclaimed his amazement at this feat. Sanji also moved around the heavily guarded Whole Cake Chateau with no difficulty (avoiding detection from Pudding) and successfully broke into the infirmary to speak with his sister, Reiju, by tying up the guard.
After acquiring the Raid Suit and the ability that came with it, Sanji was able to make great use of this new invisibility for direct combat, being able to land heavy strikes on Page One without being detected. At Onigashima, Sanji used his Raid Suit to sneak onto the Live Stage without being detected and freed Momonosuke after Shinobu's attempt failed.
Facial Reconstruction
Sanji is capable of reconstructing someone's face simply by kicking them. This ability of his debuted when Sanji was facing off against Wanze. During his fight with Wanze, he did not seem to have any control over that ability. In fact, it was discovered by accident. The kicks he inflicted to Wanze's face unintentionally reshaped it little by little until he looked entirely different, and it was reversed when the kick Sanji used to defeat him hit so hard it knocked his face back to normal. However, when Sanji reconstructed Duval's face, he clearly states that he did it on purpose, which in term means he has mastered that ability.
