Company attributes
Science is a medical device company in the brain-computer interface (BCI) industry. Science Eye, its flagship BCI system, is a visual prosthesis that aims to restore visual input to the brain for patients with two types of blindness. Science Eye is a thin, flexible, micro-LED array that is surgically implanted over the retina. Light-sensitive cells in the eye are altered by optogenetic gene therapy to allow the implant to control the activity of the cells so they send information through the optic nerve to the brain. Special glasses with sensors and cameras send information to the LED array. Science Eye is in animal testing stages as of May 2023.
Science’s platform, Science Foundry, can be used by companies to build upon Science’s internal infrastructure and gives access to Science’s tools and services, such as its thin-film electrode technologies. According to cofounder and CEO Max Hodak, Science Foundry aims to decrease the cost barrier for early-stage start-ups. Science acquired MEMSCAP’s MEMS foundry and team in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, in 2022.
