Scientific American was founded in 1845 by Rufus Porter with the motto "The Advocate of Industry and Enterprise, and Journal of Mechanical and Other Improvements." It is the oldest continuously published magazine in the United States. It has published articles by more than 200 Nobel Prize winners. Through its website, print and digital editions, newsletters, and app, Scientific American reaches over ten million people each month. The content of Scientific American's media is focused on research, ideas, and knowledge in science, health, technology, the environment, and society.
Scientific American publishes a monthly magazine in addition to daily pieces on their website. The periodical began releasing the biweekly Scientific American Mind publication in 2004, which is now only available online in addition to two other digital magazines: Mind, Space & Physics, and Health & Medicine. Scientific American regularly releases ebooks, videos, and other products, in addition to collector's editions.
Scientific American publishes fifteen editions worldwide, is read in more than thirty countries, and has a worldwide audience of more than 5.3 million people. At the time when Rufus Porter started Scientific American in 1845, the magazine was a broadsheet newspaper released biweekly and focused primarily on patents and advice for inventors. Its full title at the time was The Scientific American. The company was sold to Orson Desaix Munn and Alfred Ely Beach ten months after its founding. From 1902 to 1911, The Scientific American also supervised the publication of the Encyclopedia Americana. The Scientific American was sold again to Gerard Piel, Dennis Flanagan, and Donald Miller in 1948 and renamed simply Scientific American. Scientific American transitioned to being a monthly publication in 1921 and launched its website in 1996. Scientific American also produced a show on PBS titled Scientific American Frontiers, which ran from 1990-2005. Scientific American was purchased in 1986 and is currently owned by Holtzbrinck group of Germany.
