Established in Japan in 1960, Sekisui House is a residential developer. In 1990, the company opened its Housing Research and Development Institute in Kyoto. The R&D Institute comprises the Technology R&D Institute, the Nattoku Kobo Studio (Home Amenities Experience Studio), and about thirty other facilities.
Since 2001, Sekisui House launched the Gohon no ki greenery project to promote gardening and landscaping activities. In 2009, the company expanded into Australia and acquired some development sites. In the same year, Sekisui House launched a housing project in Japan called Green First.
In 2015, the company introduced a range of SHAWOOD homes available at Gledswood Hills NSW. In July 2023, Sekisui House began testing a pilot project that consisted of a residential PV system, a small-sized electrolyzer, hydrogen-absorbing alloy tanks, and a fuel cell. The company claimed that the hydrogen storage alloys utilized in the project possess higher energy densities when compared to battery storage.
