Semmle is a code analysis platform provider. Its platform serves technical and strategic decision making by analyzing software code quality in the context of other data, such as development cost, source code, issue tickets, test coverage, team location, and version history. The platform is built on research in compilers and data analysis.
Their services help developers search for bugs and allow those developers to create a knowledge base using all available data about the software development process. Semmle also allows users to query the knowledge base. Results are presented in user interfaces designed for the different needs of developers, managers, and executives.
Semmle is headquartered in San Francisco, with its development operations based in Blue Boar Court, Alfred Street, central Oxford, England. Semmle's customers include Credit Suisse, NASA, Google, Uber, Nordea, Microsoft, Blackline, Nasdaq, and Dell.
In September 2019, GitHub acquired Semmle. The acquisition was to help GitHub and their aim of making continuous vulnerability detection part of their integration and deployment service. Semmle's LGTM continuous code analysis platform, at the heart of which is Semmle QL (a query language and code search engine that enables code analysis to find and eradicate security vulnerabilities) will be included in GitHub's services.
