He spent 13 seasons in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings and won three Stanley Cups with the club. In Detroit, he earned a reputation as one of the best hockey players of the generation, equally effective in attack and defense. In 1994, he was the first European to win the Hart Trophy, the most valuable player in the NHL. After leaving Detroit in 2003, he played for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Washington Capitals. In total, he played 1248 games in the NHL and scored 1179 points. He completed his playing career in 2012 in the Continental Hockey League in Metallurg Magnitogorsk. As part of the national team, he became a three-time world champion, silver (1998) and bronze (2002) medalist of the Olympic Games.
