Shutterstock is a stock photography and footage company, founded in 2003 by Jon Oringer. Shutterstock is headquartered in New York City.
Shutterstock was founded in 2003 when Oringer created the site as a stock photo marketplace, using 30,000 of his own photos. He was intent on keeping the site independently funded, so he performed all tasks himself, from customer service to programming. Eventually Oringer expanded the site to allow community contributions; contributors were paid a small amount per picture download (usually between 25 cents to $1.) The site has consistently followed a subscription model for downloads, with the cost and amount of downloadable content varying over the years. Shutterstock began offering stock video content in February 2006, with Shutterstock Footage.
Shutterstock began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on October 11, 2012 under the ticker symbol SSTK. Shutterstock has made a number of acquisitions of other companies, including PicMonkey, Amper Music, and Rex Features.
Oringer announced his departure as Shutterstock's CEO in February 2020, to take effect in April 2020. On April 1, Oringer was replaced by Stan Pavlovsky.
In May 2020, Shutterstock lowered its payment rates for photographers by instituting a payment scale based on the number of downloads per year instead of being based on the lifetime number of downloads. This resulted in a large pay-cut for many users.
