Simon Kuznets (April 30, 1901 – July 8, 1985) was a statistician and economist born in Pinsk, which was part of the Russian Empire. Kuznets later became a citizen of the United States. He received his education at Columbia University and was a key figure in the field of economics, in addition to working as a statistician. His academic discipline mainly focused on economics and science.
Kuznets was a prolific mentor, with his doctoral students including prominent economists such as Milton Friedman, Robert Fogel, Stanley Engerman, Subramanian Swamy, Richard Easterlin, and Lance Taylor (economist). His own doctoral advisor was Wesley Clair Mitchell.
Throughout his career, Kuznets contributed significantly to the field of economics. In recognition of his work, he was awarded the 1971 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Kuznets passed away in Cambridge, Massachusetts on July 8, 1985.
