Between 2007 and 2009, SmartBear Software, as it is known today, was developed out of Insight Venture Partners' acquisition of Smart Bear, AutomatedQA, and Pragmatic Software. The three companies combined were initially known as AQA Holdings but were later rebranded to SmartBear Software.
After the rebranding from AQA Holdings to SmartBear Software, the company acquired Eviware and AlertSite in 2011. In 2013 the company acquired Lucierna, an APM company based in Spain. In 2015, SmartBear acquired the open-source community Swagger, and acqui-hired Swagger founder Tony Tam served as head of product for Swagger post-acquisition. In 2016, SmartBear made another acquisition of an API testing platform called CrossBrowserTesting.com (CBT).
