Overview

Snickers (stylized in all caps) is a brand of chocolate bar produced by the American candy company Mars, Inc. The candy bar consists of nougat, caramel, and peanuts topped with milk chocolate, although there exist varieties made with almonds as well as an ice cream bar alternative. Snickers is the top-selling candy bar worldwide, selling over 2 billion bars annually.

History

Snickers was first introduced in 1930, taking its name from a horse owned by the Mars family. The candy bar was initially manufactured in Chicago and sold for five cents. Snickers were not introduced in the United Kingdom until 1968, and they were sold as Marathon bars. Mars changed the name to Snickers to align with global branding in 1990.

In 1984, Snickers served as an official sponsor of the Olympic Games hosted in Los Angeles, California. While seen as a success for Mars, the campaign was met with some backlash from nutritionists, who complained that the endorsement could be misconstrued as saying candy bars were a healthy snack choice.

In 2010, Snickers launched its "You're not you when you're hungry" ad campaign, which has proved to be one of its longest-lasting and most successful. The initial ad featured actors Betty White and Abe Vigoda, and it first aired during Super Bowl XLIV and was the most-watched ad that year, generating 400 million in unpaid media impressions worth nearly $28.6 million. The campaign helped contribute to Snickers's longevity throughout the 2010s and 2020s.

Snicker's 2010 Super Bowl commercial starring Betty White and Abe Vigor was a massive success for the brand.
