Solar Ship is a company that has developed a transportation platform that utilizes a solar electric aircraft design. The company was founded in 2006 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Solar Ship was created due to Jay Godsall, the founder of the company, searching for a solution to transportation and logistics in Canada. He eventually looked to build and aircraft that could fly anywhere without the need for fuel, roads, or any infrastructure. Since its launch, the company has developed six aircraft missions. These include the Caracal Aircraft Program, Wolverine Aircraft Program, MOB-FOB, Powerstat, Teepee Hanager, and Mobile Aerostat.
The company had its first lift-off success with a ship known as the Mazava. The ship was created through a collaboration between the University of Texas and flying doctors in Africa. Its wingspan was ten meters, it was to carry 200kg of supplies up to 500km, and was originally designed as an unmanned aerial vehicle. The ship officially launched in 2010.
The Wolverine Aircraft Program was launched to create an aircraft that could take-off and land from either ground or water, use no fossil fuels, carry up to 5000kg and an ISO 20 foot shipping container, fly up to 600km and at an altitude of 3000m.
