Southwest Petroleum University (SWPU) is a petroleum university in the People's Republic of China with two campuses, the primary one in Chengdu and one in Nanchong. The university is supported and run by both the Chinese central government and the Sichuan province local government, with the local government taking on more responsibility. SWPU has academic relationships with institutions across the world, including with the United States, Russia, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, France, and Canada, and has been awarded the grand prize and first prize of “National Science and Technology Progress” and the second prize of “National Science and Technology Progress and Invention” 133 times. The chair of the university council is Chen Yongcan, and the president is Zhang Liehui.
Across its two locations, SWPU has sixteen schools, which include one photovoltaic industry and technology research institute, one institute of new energy and unconventional oil and gas, and one engineering training center.
The schools cover science, engineering, management, economics, arts, law, and education, and offer sixty-eight undergraduate programs. The schools also offer 18 first-level and 86 second-level master's programs and 4 first-level and 24 second-level doctorate programs. The university has four post-doctoral research stations, one is first-level and the other three are second-level, and all are recognized as key national programs.
SWPU has approximately 2,506 employees, including 261 full professors, senior engineers, and other senior professionals, and 574 associate professors, associate senior engineers, and other associate senior professionals. Among the university's 1,630 full-time teachers, the school's teaching staff includes one Chinese Academy of Engineering teacher, two State Council Academic Degrees Committee members, two “National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars” recipients, two Distinguished “Changjiang Scholars Program” Professors, one “Sichuan Spire Talents Training Project” candidate, and nine “New Century Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project” candidates.
SWPU has over 35,000 students, with approximately 29,367 undergraduates, 4,037 graduates, 700 Ph.D. candidates, and 301 international students. In its history, the university has graduated more than 146,000 bachelor's, master's, and doctorate students.
Southwest Petroleum University was founded in 1958 and was the second petroleum university in the People's Republic of China. The school was originally named Southwest Petroleum Institute and changed to Southwest Petroleum University in 2005.
