Spirulina is extremely rich in protein (contains 50-70% protein; for comparison, the protein content in red meat is 27%). About 15-20% of spirulina is carbohydrates. Spirulina contains 18 different amino acids, including all essential amino acids as well as sulfolipids; vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins and vitamin K, calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium, manganese, potassium and zinc, iodine.
Spirulina (genus) is the commercial name for blue-green algae, a genus of cyanobacteria. Humans and common animal species are mainly eaten by two species: Arthrospira platensis and Arthrospira maxima. Representatives of this genus are very common. Cultivated throughout the world, used as food supplements and as a standalone product, available in tablet, flake and powder form, as well as a food supplement in fish farming and aqueducts.
