He was voted the best point guard of all time in 2022. Curry is the founder of several companies, including Slyce, SC30, Unanimous Media, and Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation. Curry is also the anchor investor for Penny Jar Capital, founded in 2021, and the creator of Curry Brand, an athletic apparel brand developed in partnership with Under Armour.
Curry was born Wardell Stephen Curry II to parents Dell and Sonya Curry on March 14, 1988, in Akron, Ohio. Dell Curry is a former NBA player. Curry has two siblings, Seth and Sydel. Curry spent his early childhood years in Charlotte, North Carolina, where his father played for the Charlotte Hornets. The first six years of his education took place at Christian Montessori School of Lake Norman, a school founded by his parents. He attended Charlotte Christian School for his seventh-grade year, after which the family briefly moved to Toronto so Dell could complete his final NBA season with the Toronto Raptors. While living there, Curry spent his eighth-grade year at Queensway Christian College. He became involved in several school sports, including basketball, which he excelled at due to a history of practicing with his father and other NBA players.
The family moved back to Charlotte in 2002, and Curry returned to Charlotte Christian School, where he continued to play basketball. He graduated in 2006 and attended Davidson College. Although Curry excelled at high school basketball, he didn't receive scouting attention from major colleges due to his height of five feet nine at the time. He grew to six feet three during his first year at Davidson. Curry left Davidson College after his junior year to enter the 2009 NBA Draft, in which he was drafted seventh by the Golden State Warriors. He later returned to Davidson in 2022 and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree with a major in sociology in May of that year.
Curry began playing for the Davidson Wildcats in his freshman year at Davidson College. He averaged 21.5 points per game and led the team to a record 29–5 win that year. In his sophomore year, he averaged 25.5 points per game. Curry gained national recognition that season after a three-pointer shot he made led Davidson College to the Elite Eight of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s top-division basketball championship tournament. In his junior year, Curry became a point guard, averaged 28.6 points per game, and was named a consensus first-team All-American. He left Davidson College after his junior season to enter the 2009 NBA Draft, in which he was drafted seventh overall. Curry finished out his three college seasons as Davidson's all-time leader in 3-point field goals (414), free throws (479), 30-point games (30), and 40-point games (6).
Curry began playing with the Warriors as the starting point guard. He averaged 17.5 points per game in his first season and led the team with 5.9 assists per contest while starting seventy-seven of the team’s eighty-two games. He was almost voted Rookie of the Year, coming in at second place. The following year, in his second season, Curry made the 2010 All-Rookie First-Team. He averaged 18.6 points per game that season. Curry suffered from a series of ankle sprains during the 2011–12 season; as a result, he was only able to play twenty-six games, in which he averaged 14.7 points. After undergoing ligament surgery in the following off-season, he signed a four-year $44 million contract extension with the Warriors. Curry proceeded to lead the NBA in the number of three-pointers made for five seasons in a row from 2012 to 2017. His records were 272 in 2012–13, 261 in 2013–14, 286 in 2014–15, 402 in 2015–16, and 324 in 2016–17. A knee injury in the 2017–18 season broke Curry's record.
Curry averaged 22.9 points per game in the 2012–13 season. In the 2013–14 season, he averaged 24 points, was named to the All-NBA Second Team, and earned his first All-Star selection. The next season, he was named the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) after helping take the Warriors to an NBA-best winning score of 67–15, and again in the 2015–16 season after achieving the highest NBA season average of 30.1 points per game. He averaged 25.3 points per game in the 2016–17 season and played his fourth All-Star game.
Curry suffered a knee injury during the 2017–18 season, which limited him to only fifty-one games. The following season––2018–19––he averaged 27.3 points per game and earned a first-team All-NBA honors. In that year's playoffs, he helped bring the Warriors to a fifth straight conference title, the highest number of wins in a row for any team since conferences were instituted in 1970–71. However, the team suffered a six-game loss in the finals due to an overwhelming number of injuries. The Warriors entered the 2019–20 season without two of its All-Stars, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson. The team faced further downfall after Curry broke his hand at the beginning of the season. He was only able to play in five games that season, leading to the Warriors' league-worst record.
Curry was able to return to the Warriors for the 2020–21 season, and the team performed much better in comparison to the previous year. Curry led the NBA with 32 points per game, but the Warriors missed the playoffs that year. They performed even better in 2021–22 and qualified for postseason, where Curry was named finals MVP after scoring 31.2 points per game during the six-game series win over the Boston Celtics.
Well-known for his three-point shots, Curry has broken multiple NBA three-pointer records.
He holds the NBA record for most three-pointers made of all time (3,390 as of May 2023) and is the quickest player to reach 100, 1,000, and 2,000 three-pointers. He has set three NBA records for making the most three-point shots in a season. In the 2015–16 season, he became the first player in NBA history to win the scoring title and lead the league in both steals per game and free throw percentage all in the same season. Curry holds the record for the most consecutive games in which he made three-pointers.
