American historian
Stephen E. Ambrose (born October 1, 1936, in Decatur, Illinois, and died October 13, 2002, in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi) was an American historian, author, and essayist. He held citizenship in the United States. Ambrose received his education at Whitewater High School in Wisconsin, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and Louisiana State University. His doctoral advisor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison was William B. Hesseltine.
Over the course of his career, Ambrose received multiple awards, including the National Humanities Medal, the St. Louis Literary Award, and the Samuel Eliot Morison Prize. He was also the father of Hugh Ambrose, who followed in his footsteps as a historian.
