Tangle is a consensus mechanism based on the directed acyclic graph (DAG) that is used for storing transaction information. It was first used by IOTA for use in the Internet-of-Things (IoT) industry because the consensus mechanism has features necessary to create feasible machine-to-machine micropayment systems.
