The team was founded in 1958 on the basis of the Burevestnik team. Previously it was called "Avangard". Under the current name "Tavria" has been performing since 1963. The first match "Tavria" played on April 20, 1958 with "Chemist" from Yaroslavl (0:0).
The club was part of the DSO "Locomotive".
In 1973, Tavria became the winner of the Second League of the USSR and entered the First League.
In 1980, the team won the First League and entered the Top League. In the 1981 Major League, Tavria took 17th place, overtaking only Pakhtakor and relegated to the First League.
In the 1986/87 season, Tavria reached the semifinals of the USSR Cup (a record for the participants of the second league), where they lost to Dinamo Minsk (0:2).
The last match in the USSR championship took place on November 8, 1991 in Yekaterinburg with Uralmash (2:6).
