TerraVia is a food and biotechnology company transforming plant-based sugars into nutritional and specialty ingredients for use in food products using algae. Jonathan Wolfson and Harison Dillon founded TerraVia in 2003, and the company is currently headquartered in San Francisco, California.
TerraVia was originally called Solazyme, and focused on making fuel and industrial products. Solazyme changed its name to TerraVia in March 2016 to re-brand and focus on the development of food, supplements, and personal care products.
On June 8, 2009 Solazyme completed their series C funding round with $57 million in funding from Braemar Energy Ventures (lead investor), Lightspeed Venture Partners (lead investor), The Roda Group, Harris and Harris Group, and Solazyme Chairman Jerry Fiddler, and VantagePoint Venture Partners. The company plans on using the funding from commercialization of its products.
