Vrubel returned to the demonic theme eight years after working on the painting "The Demon and Tamara". The work on the painting is not finished for an unknown reason.
...And over the peaks of the Caucasus The exile of paradise flew by: Under it, Kazbek is like a facet of a diamond, Eternal snows shone... M. Y. Lermontov
The painting depicts a demon flying over the Caucasus. Snow—capped mountain peaks, a stormy river (presumably the Terek) are clearly visible against the background. The demon is dressed in a brown tunic, tied with a belt [3]. The painting is made in gloomy[1] brown tones, in an abstract style. Many details are missing or poorly drawn, which is why the author's intention is not completely clear.
