The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity is an unincorporated joint venture between the University of Melbourne and The Royal Melbourne Hospital, combining research, teaching, public health and reference laboratory services, diagnostic services and clinical care in infectious diseases and immunity.
The research institute is named after Peter C. Doherty, an Australian veterinary surgeon who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1996, alongside his colleague Rolf Zinkernagel, for their discoveries concerning the specificity of the cell-mediated immune defense and the biological role of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC).
The Doherty Institute collaborated with the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute during the COVID-19 pandemic in order to research and discover medical solutions for the virus. During the research, the pair found that the drug Ivermectin stopped the growth of the virus within 48 hours. Further trials are being conducted on the effectiveness of the drug on COVID-19.
