Timofey Mozgov was born on July 16, 1986 in St. Petersburg. His father, a former professional handball player, wanted his son to play sports. In the elementary grades of the boy, he began to train in the basketball section of the Admiralty specialized children's and Youth school of the Olympic Reserve. The first coach was Gennady Panyutin.
At the age of ten, the Mozgov family moved to a permanent place of residence in the village of Enem in the Republic of Adygea.
