Tofurky is a brand name owned by Turtle Island Foods that is a plant-based, non-GMO, turkey meat alternative. Tofurky is primarily made out of organic tofu and wheat proteins. Turtle Island Foods was founded in 1980 by Seth Tibbot in Forest Grove, Oregon, and would later relocate to Hood River, Oregon. Seth Tibbot ran the company out of a tree house he built in four oak tress he rented for 25$ a month for the first 7 years of operation to save money and grow the company. Tofurky became commercially available in 1995.
The following ingredients are used to make the roast portion of Tofurky:
- Water
- Vital wheat gluten
- Organic tofu (filtered water, organic whole soybeans, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride)
- Expeller pressed non-genetically engineered canola oil
- Natural vegetarian flavors
- Shoyu soy sauce (water, non genetically engineered soybeans, wheat, salt, culture)
- Non-genetically engineered corn starch
- Wheat bean flour
- Garbanzo bean flour
- Lemon juice from concentrate
- Onion
- Carrots
- Celery
- Salt
- Calcium lactate from beets
The following ingredients are used to make the stuffing portion of Tofurky:
- Organic brown rice
- Whole wheat bread cubes (whole wheat, filtered water, unbleached wheat four, organic evaporated cane sugar, organic palm oil, sea salt, yeast, natural enzymes, ascorbic acid)
- Onion
- Celery
- Expeller pressed non-genetically engineered canola oil
- Organic wild rice
- Natural vegetarian seasoning
- Granulated garlic
