Tokamak Energy Ltd is a company developing scalable technology for fusion power. Its spherical tokamak in conjunction with high-temperature superconductors (HTS) offers a small and cost-effective solution for fusion reactors. The company believes these compact devices can achieve a much higher plasma pressure for a given magnetic field than conventional tokamaks.
During its first round of testing June 2018 Tokamak Energy's ST40 Tokamak reached 15 million degrees Celcius. It uses a technique known as merging compression to achieve this, the ST40 releases energy as rings of plasma that crash together causing magnetic reconnection. Tokamak Energy is further developing its HTS technology to achieve 100 million degrees Celcius, the temperature required to fuse deuterium and tritium particles together.
Founded in 2009 by Alan Sykes, David Klingham, and Mikhail Gryaznevich the company is headquartered in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom. Sykes a tokamak pioneer and fusion physicist Gryaznevich worked together at the Culham Science Centre developing the Small Tight Aspect Ratio Tokamak (START) a small spherical tokamak.
Since 2017, Tokamak Energy has raised £77M in 2 funding rounds. The investment was made by Hans-Peter Wild, insurance and investment management group Legal & General, and venture capital company Winton Ventures.
