Turkmenistan, the official name is Turkmenistan (Turkm. Türkmenistan [tʏɾkmønʏˈθːɑːn]) is a state in Central Asia. It borders with Afghanistan and Iran in the south, with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in the north. It is washed by the internal Caspian Sea in the west, has no access to the World Ocean.
The independence of the country was proclaimed on October 27, 1991. It is a member of the UN since March 2, 1992 and a neutral state. Secular state, presidential republic. President of Turkmenistan - Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov (since February 14, 2007, before that, from December 21, 2006 to February 14, 2007, he served as acting president of Turkmenistan).
It is divided into six administrative-territorial units, five of which are velayats, one is a city with the rights of a velayat. The capital of the state is the city of Ashgabat, which is the largest in the country.
Most of the believers profess Islam.
Turkmenistan is the 4th country in the world in terms of natural gas reserves; in particular, owns the world's second largest gas field Galkynysh/.
