A heating element of a thermal head has a first electrode layer formed on a glaze layer and a second electrode layer formed opposite to the first electrode layer. A third electrode layer is formed on the first insulation layer to expose both ends of the first insulation layer in the transporting direction, and a heating resistor layer is formed across the first to the third electrode layers and the first insulation layer. A protective layer is formed covering the first to the third electrode layers, the first insulation layer, and the heating resistor layer. A system controller selectively applies the current to among the first, the second and the third electrode layers based on the image data to record.
